For one frozen second, I could not move.<\/div>\n
He was using my wellbeing as an excuse to force his way into my home.<\/div>\n
But Harrison had made one serious mistake.<\/div>\n
He thought I was alone.<\/div>\n
I wasn\u2019t.<\/div>\n
I was already dressed, sitting in my office, in the middle of a live video meeting with the executive board of Northbridge Capital, the investment firm where I worked as a senior partner.<\/div>\n
Eight people were watching me on screen.<\/div>\n
Eight people heard the drill.<\/div>\n
Eight people saw my face change.<\/div>\n
I took a slow breath, turned my webcam toward the hallway, and let the meeting continue recording.<\/div>\n
If Harrison wanted to create a scene, I was going to make sure he had the right audience.<\/div>\n
The lock broke.<\/div>\n
The door flew open.<\/div>\n
Harrison stepped inside as if he still owned the space, as if the divorce papers meant nothing, as if I were still someone he could corner and correct.<\/div>\n
Then he saw the camera.<\/div>\n
He stopped.<\/div>\n
Behind my laptop screen, one of my partners said quietly, \u201cClaire, are you safe?\u201d<\/div>\n
Harrison\u2019s face drained.<\/div>\n
I looked directly at him.<\/div>\n
\u201cYou should answer that,\u201d I said. \u201cYou\u2019re the one who broke in.\u201d<\/div>\n
Patricia gasped. \u201cThis is a family matter.\u201d<\/div>\n
I kept my voice calm.<\/div>\n
\u201cNo. This is my home. And none of you are family anymore.\u201d<\/div>\n
By the time building security arrived, the board recording had already been saved to the company\u2019s protected server.<\/div>\n
By the time the police arrived, Harrison was sweating through his expensive suit.<\/div>\n
