South Carolina judge Diane Goodstein’s home catches fire — what we know so far

A devastating fire broke out on October 4, 2025, at the Edisto Island home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein, destroying the residence and leaving three family members seriously injured. Among them were her husband, former state senator Arnold Goodstein, and their son. Judge Goodstein was not home when the fire started around 11:30 a.m., reportedly while she was walking on the beach.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as family members escaped from upper floors. Some were rescued from the surrounding marshland using kayaks, while one was airlifted to a Charleston hospital for treatment. Chief Justice John Kittredge later confirmed that the fire was caused by an “apparent explosion” that completely destroyed the property.

Authorities have not officially ruled on the cause, though speculation arose about possible links to Goodstein’s recent high-profile court rulings. However, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) stated there is “no evidence to indicate the fire was intentionally set” and that the investigation remains ongoing.

The South Carolina Judicial Branch released a statement expressing sympathy for the family while declining further comment until the investigation concludes, citing privacy concerns.

Judge Goodstein, 69, has served on the state bench since 1988 and has reportedly received multiple death threats over the years. Sources told FITSNews that she had faced renewed threats following a controversial ruling against the Trump administration weeks before the fire.

Last month, she temporarily blocked the state election commission from releasing voter data to the Department of Justice, a decision later overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. The case involved sensitive voter information and sparked national debate.

Her husband, Arnie Goodstein, was critically injured after leaping from the burning house while helping others escape. Their son, Arnold Goodstein II, also sustained serious injuries.

The tragedy has shaken South Carolina’s judicial community, which now waits for answers amid growing concern for Judge Goodstein’s safety.
