On September 11, 2001, 24-year-old stockbroker and volunteer firefighter Welles Crowther was on the 104th floor of the South Tower when Flight 175 struck; tied with his signature red bandana across his nose and mouth, he repeatedly braved smoke and fire on the 78th floor to guide groups of trapped survivors to safe exits. After rescuing at least 18 people over three trips back into the destruction, Crowther lost his life when the tower collapsed, leaving behind a legacy that was later identified through survivor testimonies, memorialized through his red bandana, and ultimately recognized 25 years after his death with the Presidential Medal of Freedom accepted by his family.
